September 26, 1932, born in Greenville, Mississippi.

Public school education, including art classes and seven years of percussion in high school band.

Delta State college, Mississippi; Memphis Academy of Art, Memphis, Tennessee; BFA, University of Houston, Houston, Texas.

1959  

Moved to San Francisco. Brief GI Bill enrollment at the Academy of Art, San Francisco. Exposure to SF art community, ideas, drugs, etc., studio work with mix-media materials in spontaneous action painting techniques.

 

1965  

Began projections with overhead projector. Light art experimentation. Extended studio work with musician Christopher Tree developing spontaneous light-sound collaboration. First light show studio, Pine St. Also the construction of a 4' x 6' kinetic light panel for the Red Dog Saloon, Virginia City, Nevada.

 

1966  

Construction of Light Show Studio, Laguna Street. January, "Vision in Motion" three weeks spontaneous presentations with electronic tape music by William Spencer. April 22 original light show, Family Dog, Avalon Ballroom dances. Sixteen weeks with groups including: The Blues Project, Big Brother and the Holding Company, the Charlatans, the Sons of Adam, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Love, the Grateful Dead, Captain Beefheart, Grass Roots, Sopwith Camel, Jefferson Airplane, Bo Didley and others. Continued studio experimentation with electronic tape, jazz... etc. BBC TV short... Light Sound Dimension group formed with Fred Marshall and Jerry Ganelli.

 

1967  

February 2, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, one week. Other Light Sound Dimension concerts include Pauley Ballroom, U.C. Berkeley, Fillmore Auditorium, Live Oak Park, Berkeley, six weeks.

 

1968  

January. Light Sound Dimension Theater opens one year and a half of performances weekly. Two presentations De Young Museum for American Institute of Architects.

 

1969  

Closed Light Sound Dimension Theater. Constructed Shotwell Street multi-media studio, two presentations of LIGHT SOUND DIMENSION at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

 

1970  

Studio work. September Europe: Holland, France, and Switzerland.

 

1971  

January. Museum of Modern Art, Paris, France and Cite Universitaire, Vincennes, France with Light Sound Dimension tapes.

February. Maison of Culture, Geneve, Switzerland. Light Sound Dimension tapes.

1974 - 1976

Relocate equipment and studio. Studio sessions with musicians including four weeks at San Francisco Dancer's Workshop studio with musicians including Jim Lowe, Steve Mitchell, Fred Marshall, and Jerry Granelli.

 

1977  

One hour video piece, Marin Video, Channel 11, with Steve Mitchell percussion.

 

1978  

March 1. Birth of Bill and Sophie's second daughter, Flora.

June 17. Longest Walk, Grace Cathedral, San Francisco. Projections on 20' x 40' rear screen with poetry and music 'interludes', Steve Mitchell, percussion.

October 1. Tribal Stomp, Greek Theater, U.C. Berkeley. Projections on six 11' x 14' rear screens with Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Canned Heat, Country Joe and the Fish, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Lee Michaels, and It Was A Beautiful Day.

 

1979  

March 5. Herbst Theater, San Francisco. Light Sound Dimension, projections on 14' x 40' rear screen with music directed by Fred Marshall, including Steve Mitchell, Dave Dunaway and Rich Girard and guest musicians.

September 8 and 9. Tribal Stomp, Monterey Fairgrounds. Projections on 12' x 36' rear screen with Peter Tosh, Country Joe and the Fish, Canned Heat.

 

1994  

April 30. The Tribute to Chet Helms. Bill organized and directed A Light Show Spectacular which included the simultaneous performance of the Bill Ham Light Show, Jerry Abrams Head Lights, The SF Light Works, Reggie Williams Straight Theater, Karl Cohen Films, Lawrence Lauterborn slides, with artists and technicians. The Maritime Hall was immersed in a full dimension San Francisco rock dance light show.

October 21. Rock Art Ball presented by Wes Wilson for Rock Art Expo '94. A full room projection assisted by Sophie Lauterborn, Flora Ham, Reggie Williams and Bruce Dauser with Lawrence Lauterborn slides. Music by Snake, Squid and Wales with Harvey Mandel, and Nick Fravenites and Friends.

 

1995
 

April 16. Kyoto Benefit Performance for Kobe Earthquake Relief. Outdoors on a large projection screen next to the Sanjo Bridge on the bank of the Kamo River. Liquid projections in collaboration with Slides of the Kobe Earthquake by Helmut Steinhauser accompanied by electronic tape music. Rained out mid performance.

 

1997
 

December 13. A LightSounDimension performance at SOMAR on a 30' rear projection screen. Assisted by Sophie Lauterborn, Scott Sayre, Flora Ham, and others. Slides by Lawrence Lauterborn, Live spontaneous music by Fred Marshll, Joshi Marshall and Steve Rossi.
